SAN ANTONIO, Texas — San Antonio FC, of the USL Championship, has appointed Carlos Llamosa as the club's head coach, the organization announced Monday. Llamosa becomes the third head coach in SAFC history as the club prepares to celebrate its 10th anniversary season in 2025.
Llamosa brings 14 years of professional coaching experience to San Antonio, having begun his career as an assistant with Chivas USA in MLS in 2010. He joined the New York Cosmos as the club returned to professional soccer after a 28-year absence, helping guide them to an undefeated home record in 2013, a NASL Fall Season title, and the NASL Soccer Bowl Championship that same year.
In 2017, Llamosa returned to MLS as an assistant with the New England Revolution before joining the Portland Timbers staff from 2018 to 2023. During his tenure in Portland, he helped the club reach MLS Cup runner-up finishes in 2018 and 2021 and claim the MLS is Back Tournament Championship in 2020.
Before coaching, Llamosa enjoyed an 18-year professional playing career. A defender, he made 181 MLS appearances across D.C. United, Miami Fusion, New England Revolution, and Chivas USA. He is a two-time MLS Cup winner with D.C. United and was named to the MLS Best XI with Miami in 2001. During his international career, Llamosa made 29 appearances for the U.S. national team, featuring in the 1999 Confederations Cup, the 2002 World Cup Qualifying campaign, and the 2002 FIFA World Cup.
"I'm very excited for the opportunity to be part of this amazing family at one of the best organizations in the country," Llamosa said. "Together with the front office and technical staff, I look forward to putting together a top team in the league."
